1 Shilling 1663 — Charles II, England
One of the first shillings of Charles II’s new milled coinage, introduced in 1663 after the Royal Mint had finally abandoned the traditional hammered production of England’s silver currency. The regular, machine-struck flan and milled edge represented a fundamental technical change and made clipping substantially more difficult.
The obverse carries Charles II’s first laureate and draped bust, while the reverse shows the four crowned shields of England, Scotland, France and Ireland arranged around the Garter star, with paired C’s for Carolus in the angles. The type belongs to the opening years of the Restoration coinage, following Charles II’s return to the throne in 1660 after the Commonwealth and Protectorate.
