England – Henry III (1216–1272) – Two Silver Pennies from the Brussels Hoard of 1908

In July 1908, workers made a remarkable discovery during the demolition of an old inn in the Rue d’Assaut in Brussels. Beneath a water cistern lay a large container holding approximately 150,000 silver coins from the 13th century, including more than 80,000 English, Scottish and Irish pennies. The Brussels Hoard ranks among the largest known medieval coin hoards.

The hoard was probably concealed around 1265, during a period of political unrest in Flanders. Its owner, and the reason why such a considerable fortune was never recovered, remain unknown. The large number of English coins also illustrates the close trading connections across the North Sea. English wool was an important raw material for the Flemish textile industry, and English silver pennies circulated widely in continental trade.

The coins date from the reign of Henry III, during which England introduced the so-called Long Cross penny in 1247. The reverse featured a long cross extending to the edge of the coin. This design made it easier to detect coins that had been clipped to remove small quantities of silver, a widespread problem in medieval currency.

Following its discovery, the Brussels Hoard was sold at auction in 1909. The British portion was acquired by the London coin dealers Baldwin and subsequently became an important source for the study of English medieval coinage. In 2004, Samlerhuset acquired a substantial part of the material. Coins from the hoard were exhibited at the British Museum in London and the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, before portions of the holding were made available to collectors.

This set contains two original silver pennies from the Brussels Hoard, struck at London and Canterbury respectively during the reign of Henry III. The coins were assembled into a presentation set by Samlerhuset.
