The Norwegian Dairy Association – Medal by Ivar Throndsen, 1890
Towards the end of the 19th century, Norwegian dairy production underwent significant changes. The introduction of new cream separators made it possible to separate cream from milk far more efficiently than before, while the establishment of dairies gradually shifted butter and cheese production from individual farms to larger, centralised facilities.
The Norwegian Dairy Association (Den Norske Meieriforening) worked to advance the dairy industry through professional cooperation and improved production methods. The medal was most likely intended as an award or medal of merit, perhaps for presentation at dairy exhibitions or in recognition of professional achievements.
The medal was struck in silver-plated bronze, a less expensive alternative to silver, and features a large, open field on the reverse intended for engraving the recipient’s name or distinction. On this example, the field remains blank, suggesting that the medal was never individually awarded.
