Product information

Canada – 2 Dollars 2000, Knowledge

A female polar bear and her two cubs stand at the edge of an ice floe. The design was chosen to illustrate the importance of knowledge – both that passed from one generation to the next and that required to survive in the demanding Arctic environment.

The coin was issued in 2000, at the beginning of a new millennium. The reverse bears the bilingual inscription KNOWLEDGE – LE SAVOIR, a theme that connects the wildlife imagery with human learning and development.

The polar bear holds a special place in Canadian coinage. Since 1996, a polar bear has appeared on Canada’s regular 2-dollar coin, popularly known as the “Toonie”. This special silver issue continues the animal motif, but with a new composition designed by Tony Bianco and engraved by Cosme Saffioti.
