The Coronation of Haakon VII and Queen Maud – 75th Anniversary, 1981
On 22 June 1906, King Haakon VII and Queen Maud were crowned in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The ceremony marked the last royal coronation in Norwegian history. Following a constitutional amendment in 1908, the provision for coronation was abolished, and subsequent Norwegian monarchs have instead received a religious blessing.
In 1981, 75 years after the coronation, this large silver medal was issued to commemorate the occasion. One side depicts the royal couple in their coronation robes, while the other features the west front of Nidaros Cathedral, together with the dates 22 June 1906 and 22 June 1981.
The medal was produced by Sporrong in a limited, numbered edition of 250 pieces in sterling silver. This example is numbered 94, as confirmed by the edge inscription “094/250”, alongside the manufacturer’s name and silver hallmark.
