1 Shilling 1663 \u2014 Charles II, England<\/h3>\n

One of the first shillings of Charles II\u2019s new milled coinage, introduced in 1663 after the Royal Mint had finally abandoned the traditional hammered production of England\u2019s silver currency. The regular, machine-struck flan and milled edge represented a fundamental technical change and made clipping substantially more difficult.<\/p>\n

The obverse carries Charles II\u2019s first laureate and draped bust, while the reverse shows the four crowned shields of England, Scotland, France and Ireland arranged around the Garter star, with paired C\u2019s for Carolus in the angles. The type belongs to the opening years of the Restoration coinage, following Charles II\u2019s return to the throne in 1660 after the Commonwealth and Protectorate.<\/p>\n
