Ing\u00f3lfr Arnarson, en norsk h\u00f8vding fra Rogaland, regnes if\u00f8lge sagaene som Islands f\u00f8rste permanente bosetter. Han kastet h\u00f8ysetepilarene \u2014 de utsk\u00e5rne trestolpene som symboliserte h\u00f8vdingens autoritet \u2014 over bord og sverget \u00e5 sl\u00e5 seg ned der de skyllet i land.
